Electronic brands and success story (kenwood)

Alabamart Blog Dpt

In 1947, a quiet revolution began in a small kitchen appliance company that would change the world. Founded by the visionary Kenneth Wood, Kenwood Limited,  not to be confused with the Japanese electronics brand of the same name that specializes on radios and all round sounds, started with something as simple as toasters. But this was no ordinary company, and Wood was no ordinary inventor. But I doubt good ol wood knew he was about to turn British kitchens into culinary powerhouses.

 Kenneth Wood

The 1950s brought a seismic shift. Kenwood introduced the Kenwood Chef, a groundbreaking food mixer that didn’t just mix ingredients—it mixed up the entire way people approached cooking! Homes across the UK couldn’t get enough of it. At the time, The Chef wasn’t just an appliance; it was a status symbol, a tool that made everyday cooking feel extraordinary. It sparked a kitchen revolution, and Kenwood was at its epicenter.

With momentum growing by the day, Kenwood hit yet another home run in 1952 with its first food processor. This wasn’t just a product—it was a statement of intent. Kenwood was here to stay, and they were going to lead the charge in transforming kitchens everywhere. Then came the 1960s, and Kenwood took things up a notch. They moved into a state-of-the-art headquarters in Havant, Hampshire in 1962, signaling that something BIG was coming. And in 1967, they did it again, launching the Trimixer—an all-in-one tool that made blending, chopping, and mixing feel like magic. But this was just the beginning.

Fast forward to 1979, and Kenwood unleashed its first full-sized food processor, securing its place as a global leader in kitchen innovation. But success wasn’t without its challenges. As the 1980s roared in, competition from heavyweights like Braun and KitchenAid turned up the heat and reducing the demand of Kenwood as there were others to get from. Kenwood faced a choice: think smart or perish, of course, a smart way is the way to go. Kenwood opened its first factory in China in 1989, a daring move designed to cut costs and stay competitive. But while others stumbled, Kenwood soared as they were producing steadily with relatively cheaper labor. With this, They didn’t just survive the 1990s—they thrived. What followed was Expanding their lineup to include blenders, kettles, and toasters, they diversified like never before. Kenneth Wood’s dream was still alive and kicking.

However, 1997 brought a moment of reflection when Kenneth Wood passed away at 81.

 Kenneth Wood's burial stone

His era had ended, but his vision hadn’t. In 2001, the story of Kenwood took a thrilling turn when Italian powerhouse De'Longhi swooped in with a game-changing acquisition.

The story of De'Longhi begins in 1902, founded by the De'Longhi family as a modest industrial parts workshop. Like Kenwood, De'Longhi had bigger dreams. But this story is about kenwood so Fast forward to the mid-20th century, and De'Longhi had become a major player in the portable heater and air conditioner markets. Yet, their ambition didn’t stop there. De'Longhi wanted to dominate every corner of the home appliance world.

And then, Kenwood happened. The 2001 acquisition of Kenwood wasn’t just another business move—it was a merger of giants, creating a superpower in the global home appliance industry. This gave De'Longhi access to Kenwood’s Chinese factory, supercharging their production capacity while keeping their design and engineering roots firmly planted in Italy.

But De'Longhi was far from done. In 2012, they pulled off a masterstroke, acquiring the perpetual rights to manufacture Braun-branded small appliances from Procter & Gamble. Then in 2020, they made headlines again with the acquisition of Capital Brands, the makers of NutriBullet, for €420 million.

Meanwhile, Kenwood wasn’t resting on its laurels. Under De'Longhi’s leadership, they continued to innovate fearlessly. In 2020, they unveiled the Cooking Chef XL, a cutting-edge kitchen marvel featuring smart technology like touchscreen controls and app connectivity. As of then, it was the future of kitchen appliances.

Fun fact–Kenneth Wood’s inspiration for the iconic Kenwood Chef came from seeing a meat mincer in a butcher’s shop. He wondered, “Why not bring that efficiency into home kitchens?” That simple thought sparked a global revolution that continues to this day.

Today, Kenwood and De'Longhi are unstoppable forces in the world of home appliances. Kenwood’s  commitment to craftsmanship, durability, and cutting-edge tech is matched only by De'Longhi’s sleek design, bold strategy, and relentless pursuit of innovation. Together, they are reshaping homes and redefining what’s possible—one kitchen, one appliance, and one bold move at a time.
